Wansfell Pike Walking Route
A Wonderful 90 Minute Circular Walk
With stunning views of the lakes, waterfalls and the opportunity to visit a variety of local pubs and shops – this walk is easily a favourite with us and our guests.
The walk progresses through varying terrain (a mixture of slate paths, fields and quiet roads) progressing to the top of Wansfell-Pike (approximately 1,500 feet above sea-level). We recommend wearing walking boots or shoes with deep tread, along with suitable clothing – do bear in mind that the top of the fells can be quite windy. Before you head-off for the day, please make our reception team aware who will be more than delighted to provide you with walking maps for the area.
1.As you reach the end of our hotel driveway, turn left (heading up-hill) following the quiet country road towards the village of Troutbeck – on the way you will enjoy spectacular views of neighbouring fells.
2. You will reach a small junction in the country road, continue straight-on towards Troutbeck
3. Between two houses you will see a slate sign reading “Wansfell”, turn left here to begin your walk towards the summit of Wansfell. When you start your ascent, the path is loose in terrain (slate chippings), however this does begin to firm-up as you progress.
Note: If you would like to visit a local pub before starting your ascent, continue past the this point and head into the “Mortal Man” (a 2 minute walk from the path) This is a fantastic dog friendly stopping-point perfect for walkers.
4. As you head towards the summit of Wansfell you will come to a wooden gate on your left, head through this gate and continue following the grassy path as it continues to head up the fell
5. When you reach the top you will enjoy breathtaking views of Windermere, Rydal, Grasmere and surrounding fells, this is a fantastic point to enjoy a well earned rest before starting your descent – note that as you walk down, the first 200m are quite steep which can be challenging for small dogs.
6. As the path starts to flatten, the trail leads onto a disused road – continue following this road and head through an iron gate (which will be on your right) following a path which concludes in Ambleside via Stagshaw waterfalls.
7. Ambleside is the perfect Lakeland town to enjoy a light lunch or explore a variety of nearby local shops before heading back towards the hotel.
8. Follow the road out of Ambleside, staying on the left hand side of the road – on your left you will see a finger-post displaying “Jenkins Cragg” – follow this route which leads onto a rural path which heads through beautiful woodlands and rural landscapes
9. You will see Holbeck Ghyll on your right, use the gate to enter the field and walk down the field back to the hotel.
Walk Details
A 7 mile circular walk over varying terrain including road, slate and mud. The walk includes stunnings views of the lake and surrounding fells from the summit of Wansfell Pike and also passes by a waterfall before leading to a nearby town (Ambleside)
