EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS
In the 1880’s Lord Lonsdale chose a secluded and peaceful place on which to build his favourite hunting lodge – and so Holbeck Ghyll was born. Perched high on a hill, boasting breathtaking views over Windermere lake and the Langdale fells, the house is a perfect setting for your own, private celebrations, business events or board meetings.
Whether simple and intimate or lavish and glamorous, celebrate with us and you’ll undoubtedly leave with cherished memories. You may have a milestone anniversary coming up, a big birthday looming or you just want a place where you can surround yourself with friends and colleagues, Holbeck Ghyll is a wonderful setting for a memorable celebration and we can cater for everything from afternoon tea in one of the elegant drawing rooms, or a more lavish affair that includes exclusive use of the hotel.
We pride ourselves on offering first class service in luxurious but homely surroundings and the hotel is set in 18 acres of English country gardens and ancient woodland with nothing but the sound of babbling becks to distract you. From the moment you and your guests step into our oak-panelled entrance hall, with its inglenook fireplace, a magical sense of history surrounds.
Thanks to the launch of our beautiful new private dining suite – The Segrave Room– there is also now the option to celebrate in exclusive surroundings, serviced by your own kitchen, waiting staff and bespoke fine dining menu. With floor-to-ceiling windows which gaze out over the lake and fells, it’s a lovely facility which sits separately from the main house next to the The Lodge – a detached retreat that offers six adjacent double suites, just in case you wish to make a night of it.
FAMILY CELEBRATIONS AND PRIVATE PARTIES
Holbeck Ghyll has a number of lovely private dining rooms available, which make it the ideal place to enjoy an intimate party or extra special celebration with colleagues, friends and family.
If you have a party of seven or more diners, our talented kitchen brigade will work closely with you to put together a bespoke Private Dining set menu ranging from £55 per person up to £75 per person. This bespoke menu covers canapés and welcome drink of Prosecco, a three course menu and coffee & petit fours and is served in The Sir Henry Segrave Room. This Private Dining Room boast floor to ceiling views across Lake Windermere to the iconic Langdale Pikes in the distance. Large enough to provide sufficient space for pre-dinner drinks and a fully stocked bar, The Sir Henry Segrave Room can accommodate up to 30 people on a variety of table formats, from rounds of ten people to one long table.
THE SEGRAVE ROOM
With the launch of The Segrave Room at Holbeck Ghyll, fine dining will never be the same. This fabulous new private dining suite is perfect for celebratory gatherings, milestone anniversaries, extra special birthday dinners or simple, intimate gatherings. You get your own chef and butler staff allowing you to choose your menu for your special celebration.
The venue is licensed for entertainment and music and has stunning views through floor-to-ceiling windorws of Windermere; which is why we decided to name it after one of the lake’s most celebrated heroes, Sir Henry Segrave, who died after setting the water speed record on the lake in the summer of 1930.
A four times Grand Prix winning racing driver and the first man to do 200mph in a car, Segrave began racing boats in 1927 and on June 13, 1930, piloted Miss England II in an attempt on the water speed record. He reached 98.76 mph, beating the previous best by 6mph, before disaster struck on a follow-up run and his boat capsized. He was rushed to Belle Grange, a house on the lakeshore at High Wray, where he died shortly afterwards.
The Segrave Room can cater for up to 30 guests and is available to hire all year round, from £45 per person for a three course menu with coffee and petit fours.
The Oak Room, which is the original house dining room, offers spectacular views over the valley to the lakeland fells beyond. Furnished in traditional Arts and Crafts style, its decor is reflective of the rest of our ground floor.
A specially commissioned chandalier dominates the elaborate ceiling while hand blown light shades throw soft light onto the wooden oak panels and across the tables. Heavy drapes and plump cushions add to the luxurious feel of this dining room.
The Oak Room can be used in conjunction with The Terrace Room, either to give you a larger dining area or to have one room for your private drinks and using the other room as your dining room.
We are able to seat 34 people in this Dining Room.
