History
Built in the 19th Century, Holbeck Ghyll Country House Hotel was bought as a luxury hunting lodge in 1888 by one of the richest men in the country – the fifth Earl of Lonsdale Hugh Lowther. The ‘Yellow Earl’, as he was known, was the first president of the Automobile Association and bequeathed the famous Lonsdale Belt to boxing.
With the Arts & Crafts movement flourishing, Lord Lonsdale gave Holbeck Ghyll a modish makeover which is still admired today, with elegant details including stained glass windows, fine plasterwork and carved wooden panelling running throughout the house.
Holbeck Ghyll Country House Hotel remained a private home for many years, before being converted into a hotel in 1973. Since then it has earned an enviable reputation as one of the top luxury Lake District hotels, offering Michelin Star fine dining, an award-winning wine cellar and exacting standards of service for the ultimate short break.
