Built in the 19th Century, Holbeck Ghyll was bought as a luxury hunting lodge in 1888 by one of the richest men in the country, Lord Lonsdale. The ‘Yellow Earl’, as he was known, was the first president of the Automobile Association and bequeathed the famous Lonsdale Belt to boxing.
He gave Holbeck Ghyll an Arts & Crafts makeover which was so fashionable at the time and which can still be seen in the wealth of detail throughout the house, including stained glass windows and carved wooden panelling. Holbeck Ghyll remained a private house for many years, before being converted into a hotel in 1973.
