Experience the ultimate in Summer breaks.

Where can you see 300 year old topiary, one of the largest collections of Rhododendrons in Europe or three national collections, (of Astilbe, Meconopsis & Polystichum, for the professional!). Throughout the spring and early summer the Cumbrian countryside is bursting with colour as the huge array of spring and summer flowers reach their spectacular peak.

Starting in late March and April with hundreds of daffodils, The National Gardens Scheme and Rydal House, home of the poet Wordsworth, kick-starts the season with their tribute to Wordsworth's Daffodils. Other Gardens open from Cartmel to Carlisle, all in a blaze of yellow.

Following this, quiet wooded glens become carpeted with bluebells before the stunning displays of rich coloured Rhododendrons and Azaleas, culminating in the Holker Hall Garden Festival, ablaze with colour, in early June. Alongside Holker Hall Garden Festival is the CountryFest show in Kendal. The summer closes with the Westmorland County Show on the second Thursday in September.

Book our Summer Garden Break and visit our local gardens while using Holbeck Ghyll as the perfect base to retire to after a relaxing day of seeing some of the most beautiful gardens in Cumbria.

Arrive in time for Afternoon Tea; this is a delicate affair taken beside one of our large, crackling log fires – with finger sandwiches, scones and cream cakes, buttered crumpets and time to catch up on a few chapters from your favourite book.

Throughout the spring and summer the Cumbrian countryside is bursting with colour as the huge array of spring and summer flowers reach their spectacular peak. Choose a visit to one of the gardens below, and those on our Garden Break will have their entrance fee refunded, or just explore the beautiful countryside, stroll along sparkling clear rivers under the budding trees with their bright green leaves.  Either way you can park up in a quiet lay-by and munch your way through the luxury picnic hamper, supplied from our kitchen.

Dinner time is our usual Michelin starred winter menu – drawing on seasonal produce such as local lamb and freshly landed fish. Our restaurant team can recommend some great Burgundian wines or a light Sancerre to compliment your dinner. Our pastry kitchen puts such spring delights on the menu as the ever popular Pineapple dessert or the Lemon plate.

The morning is the time for a lazy lie-in. Order breakfast in bed before you luxuriate in a bath full of bubbles. Our late –checkout means you have plenty of time to relax, just sit out on our terrace and admire the fabulous view. The daring take a plunge, sinking low into our outdoor hot tub to enjoy temperatures of over 40 degrees and the stunning view over the fells while their partner could enjoy a treatment in our ESPA spa.
